Data center cleaning that gets racks into the hall sooner

Micron removes dust and cleans the air during construction and fit-out, so a data hall reaches a condition racks can safely be rolled into as early as the programme allows. That is what this company is for. The same crews and the same written procedures also clean operating halls, scope by scope.

Site readiness

When can racks go into the room?

That is the question a hall under construction is actually asking, and it is the one this company exists to answer. Cleaning is only ever a schedule item — nobody buys it for its own sake. Getting the room to rack-ready sooner is the outcome; the three things below are why that is a checkable claim rather than a slogan.

1. The standard the room is measured against

A finished hall is measured against ISO 14644-1 Class 8: no more than 3,520,000 particles ≥ 0.5 µm per cubic metre, 832,000 ≥ 1 µm, and 29,300 ≥ 5 µm. That standard classifies a space, by airborne particle concentration, in a stated occupancy state — it does not certify a contractor, it does not cover gaseous contamination, and no cleaning company can hold it. Knowing precisely what it does and does not govern is the difference between verifying a room and asserting one.

2. Removal, not redistribution

Most of what passes for cleaning in a data hall moves dust from one surface to another and puts a fraction of it back into the airstream. Floors are never swept. HEPA filtration is rated 99.97% at 0.3 µm so what the vacuum picks up does not leave through the exhaust. Cleaner goes onto the cloth and is never sprayed above equipment. Work runs top-down, and cloths are flipped or replaced every three to six feet so captured dust stays captured.

3. Cleaning that runs concurrently

Through fit-out we staff two cleaning technicians per ten installers, trailing the work as it happens; corridors are vacuumed hourly during rack roll-in. During rough-in, five per cent of the tile field is lifted and cleaned per night so the plenum is done without stopping the trades above it. The pre-fit-out deep clean begins 24 to 48 hours before the first racks roll in. Work that runs concurrently is not work sitting on the critical path — and dust prevented in phase one is dust nobody waits on in phase five.

So how many days is it?

We do not publish one, and you should treat a contractor who does with some care. The honest duration depends on the tile field, the surfaces in scope, how much of the work can run concurrently with the trades, and the hours per week your change control will allow a crew on site — and a number published without those inputs is advertising, not an estimate.

What we will do is price and programme it as arithmetic. Micron quotes cable tray, containment, walls, raised floor and slab work from a standing task list with a time in minutes against each unit, multiplied by your measured quantities; the duration falls out of the same calculation. The largest single lever on the date is the work window. Our standard bid staffs Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no weekends and no overtime; wider coverage is available and quoted at premium rates at the time of request. Construction and fit-out

Removing dust and cleaning the air while the building work is still going on

Dust in a data hall is an air problem before it is a surface problem, and during construction the airborne half is what stands between a finished room and a room racks can go into. The programme has five phases; the air controls run through all of them.

The five phases, and where you join

  1. Base build, shell and tenant improvement

    Building handover through overhead tray and busway installation, raised floor grid and fan-wall plenum complete. Preventive, plus a daily rough clean that continues through every later phase.

  2. Infrastructure rough-in and cable pull

    Low-voltage racks going up, before network racks arrive. Five per cent of the tile field lifted and cleaned per night, weekly overhead and containment work — so the plenum gets cleaned without stopping the trades above it.

  3. Pre-fit-out deep clean

    Trays and busway closed, heavy lifts done. Begins 24 to 48 hours before the first racks roll in. This is the gate.

  4. Rack and network fit-out

    Rack arrival to substantial completion. The phase where a clean hall stops being clean, so the crew works alongside the installers rather than after them.

  5. Post-construction final clean

    All racks in, cable dressing complete, no overhead work left. Ends in particle samples against ISO 14644-1 Class 8 limits, and a Certificate of Cleanliness at handover — our own record of the readings, not a third-party certification.

The air controls that run through all five

Air handling
CRAC, CRAH and fan-wall units wrapped and idled until the first deep clean is complete, then unwrapped and run for a two-hour purge with differential pressure monitored across the filters.
Filtration
Temporary MERV-11 filters replaced with new MERV-13 units before final testing begins.
Air scrubbers
Standard on new-construction work, and run for 24 hours before the final samples are taken.
The plenum
Non-critical perforated tiles sealed for the duration, and perforated tiles swapped for solid ones in coordination with the operator, so the under-floor is not fed from a room that is still a building site.
Entry hygiene
Boot cleaners at common entrances, tack mats at every hall entry and exit, automatic shoe-cover dispensers with booties changed on entry and exit — checked and refilled a minimum of twice daily. Corridors cleaned to the same frequency as the hall.
Method
Floors are never swept. HEPA filtration at 99.97% at 0.3 µm. Cleaner onto the cloth, never sprayed above equipment. Top-down sequencing. No open cable cutting once the hall is clean.
Verification
Handheld particle check every 5,000 sq ft at the pre-fit-out deep clean; a minimum of three samples evenly spaced across the hall at handover.

Scope

What we clean

Seven scopes, each with its own standard operating procedure, acceptance criteria and quoted work window. On a construction programme they are sequenced into the phases above; on an operating hall they are bought individually. Pick the one you are specifying.

Method

How the work is controlled

General janitorial practice moves dust around a room. Inside a data hall that is the failure mode, not the inconvenience. Four controls run across every scope we quote.

Filtration

HEPA vacuums rated 99.97% at 0.3 µm, used with soft-brush attachments around cable and equipment. Floors are never swept — sweeping puts settled dust back into the airstream.

ESD-safe chemistry

Anti-static, low-lint microfiber; Brillianize for acrylic and polycarbonate; ACL Staticide for painted and coated metal; 70% IPA and neutral ESD-safe cleaners. Water only on light dust and sensitive surfaces.

Top-down sequence

Work starts at the highest point that can be safely reached and moves down, so that dust released above a cleaned surface is captured rather than re-deposited. Cloths are flipped or replaced every three to six feet.

Verification

Every section is inspected with an LED flashlight held at a shallow angle — the only reliable way to see residual dust on a dark surface under data hall lighting. A supervisor performs a visual check and signs off before the crew leaves.

Boundaries

What we do not touch

Most of the risk in a data hall cleaning contract sits in what the vendor assumed was included. We publish the boundary rather than negotiate it after an incident.

  • No energized equipment. No breaker operations. Micron performs no lockout/tagout.
  • No internal cleaning of racks, IT hardware, PDUs, RPPs, CRAC/CRAH coils or busway interiors.
  • No disassembly or movement of racks, containment, cable tray or production gear.
  • No work above 12 ft. Ladder-accessible surfaces only, unless lift work is separately quoted.
  • No hazard remediation — asbestos, lead, mould, sewage, chemical or biohazard spills, fuel or coolant.

On site

Working inside your facility

Access
Badging and unescorted access are arranged by the client. Our personnel meet client badging and background screening standards.
Confidentiality
Work is performed under the client’s NDA where one is required.
Photography
Where a site operates a photography ban, documentation is limited to checklists and sign-off sheets. Photo records are produced only where the client permits them.
Change control
Any work not listed in the agreed scope requires a written change order before it is executed.
Insurance
A certificate of insurance naming the client as certificate holder is available on request.
Workmanship
Cleaning defects are covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty from the service date. Re-soiling caused by other trades or by the environment is excluded.

Send us the scope and the date

Hall count, surfaces in scope, what phase the building is in, the access constraints, the change window, and the date you need racks in the room. That is enough to price against and enough to tell you honestly whether the date is reachable. If something you need falls outside what we do, we will say so in writing rather than price around it.
